Closing Question:  Imagine that you are a Palestinian living near Jerusalem in 1949.  Write a paragraph explain your opinion of the events studied in class.  Use the following vocabulary:  Zionism, 1948 War, UN Partition.

HW:   In 1948, Arabs and Jews went to war over rights to the land of Palestine.  Although Palestinian Arabs had the support of their neighboring Arab states, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, they lost the war to a determined Jewish Israeli Army.  Land changed hands (compare maps above), and the people on that land found themselves having to make tough decisions.  Some Arabs found themselves living under Israeli rule.  Other Arabs were forced off their land, creating Palestinian Refugees (see map above).  Your readings will tell you about each of these groups.  DIRECTIONS:  Read TWO handouts, ARAB ISRAELIS and PALESTINIAN REFUGEES.  On a separate sheet of paper, answer the questions to ARAB ISRAELIS on the FRONT, and PALESTINIAN REFUGEES on the BACK.  You must answer in complete sentences.

The maps below show the west Bank after 1993.  Notice that Palestinians gained "autonomy" or limited control over a few regions.  This authority was given to the Palestinian Authority.
