Coffin 793-797: Reorganizing British Rule in India
Below is the movie we watched today in class....
If you're interested... this is the time/reason for the growth of Irish Nationalism. Specifically, the Irish Republican Brotherhood is created at this time. This is the precursor of the IRA (Irish Republican Army) which terrorized the British in the 1960's and 1970's.
The song was based on a true story of the fate of one young couple during the Irish famine. Athenry is a town in western Ireland. The song tells the story of Lord Trevelyan who brought a supply of corn back from America in a bid to battle starvation during the potato famine in the mid-nineteenth century. Unfortunately it was feed corn, too hard to be milled, so his attempt was useless. However, local people thought it would save them and so broke into the stores, were arrested, and subsequently deported to Australia. The song has been covered and recorded by many artists since.
If you want to hear some good ol' British nationalism to counter this Irish nationalist music check out this link:
By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young girl calling "Michael, they have taken you away, For you stole Trevelyan's corn, So the young might see the morn. Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay."
Chorus: Low lie the fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly Our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.
By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young man calling "Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free Against the famine and the crown, I rebelled, they cut me down.
Now you must raise our child with dignity."
By a lonely harbor wall, she watched the last star fall As the prison ship sailed out against the sky For she lived to hope and pray for her love in Botany Bay It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

- If the Industrial Revolution did not occur, would there even be a need for imperialism? - Did the Europeans have genuinely good intentions for your form of imperialism? Why or why not? - Which cause of imperialism was the most beneficial for Europe? Was there any cause of imperialism that was the most beneficial for the colonies?
- Which cause of imperialism created the most harm for the colonies? Explain and support your answer. - Is there any justification for your cause of imperialism? - Is your cause justification for neocolonialism today?
