CLOSING DISCUSSION: SCI REV
DUE TODAY: "Major Figures Chart" and Kuhn Reading (see HW Monday, Dec 5 for details)
These are actual AP exam questions. Notice how they want you to think about the Sci Rev.
Analyze how Galileo, Descartes, and Newton altered traditional interpretations of nature and challenged traditional sources of knowledge. (2009)
Assess the impact of the Scientific Revolution on religion and philosophy from 1550 to 1750. (2004)
Explain the development of the scientific method in the seventeenth century and the impact of scientific thinking on traditional sources of authority. (2000)
These are questions I would like us to consider.... they are inherently related to the AP questions above.
What is Kuhn's thesis regarding scientific revolutions? How does the information from your chart "fit" into his structure of scientific revolutions?
The scientific revolution can be characterized as an epistemological revolution in Western Civilization. Defend this assertion with evidence.
What issues of modern science challenge us to reconstruct our paradigm?
Do scientific "models" of reality need to directly correlate to our experience of reality itself? Can we achieve a model that corresponds to reality.
Changes in epistemology result in changes in ethics and metaphysics. How does this assertion explain the connection between the scientific revolution and the Enlightenment.
