TOPIC: Introduction to Iran

 

What is the ethnic majority in Iran?

What is the religious majority in Iran?

Name the two people who currently lead the country.

Explain why there exists such distrust and hatred between the United States and Iran.

Mordechai Vanunu (shown in the cartoon) is a former Israeli nuclear technician who, citing his opposition to nuclear weapons , revealed details of Israel's nuclear weapns program to the British press in 1986.  He was subsequently lured to Italy by a Mossad agent, where he was drugged and abducted by Israeli intelligence agents. He was transported to Israel and ultimately convicted in a trial that was held behind closed doors.  Vanunu spent 18 years in prison, including more than 11 in solitary confinement. Released from prison in 2004, he became subject to a broad array of restrictions on his speech and movement.

HW:   Read the Khomeini biography.  Complete the acrostic poem.  You must write original sentences based on what you learned from the reading and class today!  You will not get credit for finding a sentence that begins with a letter in his name then copying it down.  This is due tomorrow.

ON BOARD:  A look at how Iran's history impacted a generation.  What if you were born in 1940, and lived through 1953 and 1979?  How did those historic years shape your opinion of the United States?  What if you were born in 1995 and did not experience those events?  How would your opinion of the United States differ?
