TOPIC: Closing Discussion: Is globalization a postitive or negative process? Does it serve to better humanity or harm humanity?
Today you'll use:
- What Makes Us Western? The West, Unique, not Universal (HANDOUT)
- GLOBALIZATION AND CULTURE handout from yesterday
Quote analysis:
“The homogenizing influences of globalization that are most often condemned by the new nationalists and by cultural romanticists are usually positive; globalization promotes integration and the removal not only of cultural barriers but of many of the negative dimensions of culture. Globalization is a vital step toward both a more stable world and better lives for the people in it.”
“In many societies, particularly indigenous people, view culture as their richest heritage, without which they have no roots, history or soul. Its value is other than monetary. To commodify it is to destroy it.”
Discussion Point: Can globalization and supply chains promote peace?
New vocabulary defined in notebook page: CLOSING DISCUSSION
monoculture
monetary
Dell Theory of Conflict Resolution
homogenizing
indigenization
romanticists
westoxification

GLOBALIZATION ASSESSMENT
Based on all we’ve learned and read about globalization, you must write a one page position statement addressing this question: Is globalization a positive or negative process? Does it serve to better humanity, or harm humanity?
You must make TWO distinct, strong arguments in defense of your opinion.
Arguments must be backed by information from readings. You are expected to use relevant quotations from any of the readings to defend your argument.
Vocabulary makes your argument better! Use vocabulary discussed and defined in class.
Your final draft must be one page typed. It must be single spaced. Please use one inch margins all around. It must be free of errors. Proofread! Use the appropriate MLA heading, see the syllabus if you forgot what that means.
You will be graded based on the following criteria
- Conventions of writing (grammar, spelling, formatting)
- Validity of argument (have you chosen two strong, logical, correct arguments?)
- Strength of evidence (have you used evidence and explanation persuasively to defend your position?)
